Veerappan escapes with his hostage

Though more than 4,000 jawans of the Special Task Force were hot on his trail for nearly 24 hours, Veerappan on Saturday managed to escape with his hostage, Janata Dal leader H Nagappa.

STF sources disclosed this to rediff.com on condition of anonymity. < P> An informer had led the STF to Dinnahalli forest, where Veerappan was believed to be hiding. Elaborate arrangements were made and the area surrounded, they said.

However, when the forces reached the spot, they found only deserted tents and cooked food. According to the sources, the forces missed the brigand by an hour.

It is believed that he has escaped to Tamil Nadu through the Katheguni forest. The forces have returned to the Gundal base camp, the sources said.

This could be a major setback to the Karnataka government, as the brigand had warned against launching any operation to rescue the hostage.
