Home ministry seeks report on accident from Bihar govt

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Union home ministry has sought a detailed report from the Bihar government on the Howrah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express derailment, in view of the conflicting statements made by the railways top brass and the state government officials about cause of the accident.

The accident has so far claimed 125 lives and injured over 250.

Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi and the ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Laloo Prasad Yadav had pointed fingers at the 'weak condition' of the bridge over Dhawa river for the derailment, while Union Railway Minister Nitish Kumar, Laloo's arch rival, had mentioned sabotage as the likely cause of the accident.

State government sources said that Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani intervened in a bid to stop the blame game by asking for the detailed report.

Meanwhile, the state Home Secretary U N Panjiyar said he has asked the district magistrate and the superintendent of police of the Aurangabad district, under whose jurisdiction the accident occurred, to prepare a report and submit it to the state government.
