Rajdhani mishap: Rescue operation
ends, final toll: 119

Four days after the derailment of the Howrah-Delhi Rajdhani Express in Aurangabad district of Bihar, the railway authorities on Friday called off rescue operations at the accident site and put the final toll at 119.

Unofficial figures, however, says at least 125 perished in the mishap.

"The [rescue] operation is finally over. We have searched all the bogies, including the worst affected AS2 coach. We believe there are no more bodies trapped inside now," Mughalsarai Divisional Railway Manager K K Saxena said.

Saxena said 106 bodies were recovered from the wreckage, while 12 persons succumbed to injuries in various hospitals in Gaya, Aurangabad, Sasaram and Mughalsarai. One passenger died on board a special train to Howrah.

A list of those killed and injured would be released only after detailed verifications, he said and added that this might take a couple of days.

Meanwhile, traffic between Gaya and Moghulsarai was restored this morning on the down line after trial runs by four goods trains. The first passenger train left Moghulsarai for Gaya early in the morning.

On Up line, Saxena said, work was on in full swing to repair the tracks and a portion of the bridge badly damaged in the mishap.
