In the next two years every citizen of India would be provided with an identity card, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said on Saturday.
This, Advani said, would help in checking illegal immigration to the country.
Addressing a public rally in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, Advani said illegal immigration, particularly from Bangladesh, had assumed the contours of a major problem in the past decade or so. In the post-9/11 context it has become imperative to deal with this problem expeditiously, he said.
The deputy prime minister said though India in the past couple of years had succeeded in convincing the world about the dubious role played by Pakistan in fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir, the country must learn to fight its own battles.
