Karnataka farmers for rail roko
agitation on September 29

The Cauvery River Protection Committee, comprising people against release of Cauvery waters to Tamil Nadu, has decided to hold a rail roko (rail blockade) in Bangalore on September 29, committee chairman and former MP Made Gowda announced on Thursday in Mandya.

The central fact-finding committee, led by Union water resources ministry Secretary A K Goswami, on Thursday returned to Delhi after visiting some dams on the Cauvery in Karnataka and some irrigated areas to make a survey of standing crops and the amount of water needed to save them.

Protests against the Centre's directive to release water to Tamil Nadu continued with all the districts in the Cauvery basin observing an unannounced bandh on Thursday and instances of disturbances being reported from the Bangalore-Mandya route.

In other incidents, a group of farmers on Thursday ransacked the offices of the Irrigation and Agriculture Departments in Mysore and manhandled some officials.

The attackers alleged that the officials had failed to submit relevant statistics to the fact-finding committee. The officials suffered minor injuries.

Later, the attackers staged a protest at the district commissioner's office.

In Mysore, the Working Journalists Association held a protest march on Thursday. People from all walks of life participated with farmers even bringing their cattle along.
