The Lashkar-e-Tayiba has planned attacks on Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh activists, including temples across the country, to avenge the killing of Muslims during the Gujarat riots, Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police A K Suri said on Thursday.
He said the police learnt about the attacks following the arrest of Zia Mustafa alias Arbaz alias Abdullah Umar, LeT's district commander-cum-finance chief for Anantnag district.
Mustafa, suspected to be involved in the Nadimarg massacre of 24 Kashmiri Pandits, was arrested following a tip-off, Suri said.
He claimed the militant had also revealed vital information about the outfit's plan to create disturbance across the country.
"The LeT operatives were also asked to establish their presence among Muslim youth in Delhi, Gujarat and other parts of the country for waging Jihad," Suri said.
He said the outfit was trying to create more hideouts in the valley and the commanders had been directed to create them at the residences of political activists, especially those belonging to the People's Democratic Party, the Congress and the National Conference.
The DGP also added that infiltration in the valley was picking up slowly after Pakistan, on Wednesday, made several attempts to push in ultras in Jammu and Kashmir.
Asked about the reliability of the police claim in view of the revelations about the Pathribal incident, Suri said every incident is not the same and they are different from each other.
Five persons were killed allegedly in a fake encounter by security forces at Pathribal and police had claimed that the deceased were foreign mercenaries involved in the Chattisinghpora massacre in which 35 Sikhs were killed in March 2000.
Subsequent investigations into the matter revealed that the deceased were local civilians who went missing immediately after the massacre.
