The death of a HIV-infected woman in Andhra Pradesh is snowballing into a controversy with National Commission for Women Chairperson Poornima Advani saying she suspected some 'hushing up' in the case.
Advani arrived at Kuppam in Chittor district from Bangalore on Sunday on a fact-finding mission.
She has been making enquiries about the death of HIV-infected Pavnamma, who was allegedly stoned to death. Advani has extended her stay by one more day 'to dig out the facts'.
Advani called on the mother and brother of the deceased and visited the burial ground in her quest for more details about the incident.
"I am not satisfied with the replies I got and there appears to be some hush up kind of thing. So I decided to stay back and continue my enquiries for the second day," she said.
While the family members and local officials maintained that Pavnamma died due to natural reasons, Advani found fault with the burial ground managers for not maintaining any register to record deaths.
She also alleged that the state government did not react in a proper manner to the incident, which has 'global ramifications' and expressed fears that attempts were being made to hush up the episode.
