The Centre on Thursday came to the rescue of Sangh Parivar organisations over their alleged role in the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya asserting before the Liberhan Commission that it was an 'unplanned' event.

"There is no evidence to suggest that there was a conspiracy and plan to demolish the structure," the Centre's counsel Lala Ram Gupta told the Commission, probing the demolition of the disputed structure at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992.

Maintaining that no organisations could be held responsible for the demolition, Gupta asserted it was also outside the scope of the terms of reference of the Commission to inquire into the relationship between various Sangh Parivar organisations.

"The question of inter-relationship between organisations such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Bajrang Dal, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or the Bharatiya Janata Party is wholly irrelevant before the Commission," the Centre's counsel said.

The Centre's reply was in response to the Commission's question on contradictions in the evidence of various leaders on the role of the organisations at the forefront of the Ram temple movement.

Gupta said the Commission could also not go into the conspiracy angle.

Elaborating, the counsel said the Centre as well as the BJP had termed the demolition as a spontaneous act of the karsevaks.
