The Uttar Pradesh government has introduced reservation in judiciary beginning with the appointment of presiding officers in labour courts and industrial tribunals.
"The vacant posts in labour courts and industrial tribunals will be filled up by scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and other backward caste nominees within two weeks, as the government has extended reservation up to 50 per cent [in that sector of the judiciary]," Minister of State for Labour Dharam Pal said in Lucknow on Wednesday.
The facility has been extended through a government order issued in April, he said.
Former Union law minister and legal luminary Ram Jethmalani welcomed the move.
"The modern generation has to make penance for the wrongs of the past 2000 to 3000 years," he told a private television channel.
