The Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested four persons, including two nurses, a ward-boy and the father of a girl child, in connection with the baby swapping case at the Government Maternity Hospital.

Additional Commissioner of Police A K Khan said the mother of the girl would also be arrested for swapping her baby with a boy.

The arrests came a day after the police solved the case and restored the boy to his parents Latha and Janga Reddy. The girl was also handed over to her parents Mahmoodabi and Nazeer Ahmed.

Apart from Ahmed, those arrested are Suvarna Mary and Surya Kala (both nurses), and Surendra Babu (ward-boy).

They have been charged under sections 336, 167, 201 and 419 read with section 34 of the Indian Penal Code and remanded to judicial custody.

Khan said section 336 has been invoked for rash and negligent action involving the life of a girl child. Mahmoodabi and her husband will be charged for impersonating as biological parents of the boy.

A probe on the possibility of involvement of any other persons and suspected underhand dealings in the exchange of babies in the hospital is being conducted.

The police are awaiting the results of DNA tests conducted on the two babies and their parents. The results of lie detector tests on the two nurses and the ward boy are also awaited, he said.
