Gujarat riots victim narrates woes to Nanavati panel

A Gujarat riots victim on Wednesday narrated to the two-man probe panel about violence that occurred in Naroda area on February 27 last year, the day Godhra train carnage took place.

All the riot victims or witnesses from Naroda area have so far narrated incidents of communal frenzy that took place on February 28 and onwards.

Deposing before Justice (retd) G T Nanavati and Justice (retd) K G Shah, the victim Mohammed Sharif Mallik alleged that a man in his locality was stabbed, while his friend's house was torched on February 27.

Mallik also told the commission that he saw Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Naroda Dr Mayaben Kodnani and Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Jaideep Patel making inflammatory speeches to an armed mob on the morning of February 28 last year.

Mallik said he had seen Kodnani and Patel amid the mob for about three to four minutes after which it went on a rampage in his Muslim locality.

Claiming violence on February 27 night, he said around 2200 hours IST, he heard of an incident where one Babubhai Pathan was stabbed to death following which the whole locality stayed awake for the entire night, fearing more trouble.
