At least 17 persons -- eight policemen and nine civilians -- were injured when militants bombed a heavily-guarded police station at Handwara in north Kashmir's Kupwara district Wednesday afternoon.

Police sources said militants tossed a powerful hand grenade inside the police station.

"The grenade exploded in the compound injuring 14 persons. Eight cops of the police station were among the injured. They have been rushed to a local sub-district hospital," a police official reached by telephone said.

No terrorist group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
