Illegal quarry collapses in AP; 5 dead

Five people were killed and 14 injured when an unauthorised gem quarry collapsed in Vishakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh on Monday evening.

The mishap occurred at Karaka village in Golugonda mandal in Narsipatnam agency area when a group of labourers were leaving the mine located on a hill surrounded by thick reserve forest.

They had dug a 20-metre long tunnel without any technical assistance and it collapsed at about 0630 IST.

District Collector Praveen Prakash reached the spot with revenue and police officials to organise rescue and relief operations.

Only one body was retrieved till morning.

The collector announced ex-gratia assistance of Rs 50,000 each to the families of the dead.
