Three fire brigade personnel were injured while controlling a major fire that broke out after a diesel tanker overturned below a flyover in Sion in central Mumbai, fire brigade sources said on Wednesday.
A large number of vehicles, including twelve autorickshaws, two taxis and some two-wheelers, were completely gutted late on Tuesday night while two residential buildings also caught fire. Residential buildings close to the accident spot were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The raging blaze was brought under control around 3am on Wednesday.
The tanker coming from Navi Mumbai was heading towards the western suburb of Bandra when it overturned near the Sion circle under the flyover, which connects to the Eastern Express Highway. The tanker driver and cleaner fled from the spot after the incident.
Traffic on the busy road, which commuters use to travel to their offices in south Mumbai, has been hit. The area has been cordoned off.
