In a surprise move on Wednesday, Hurriyat chairman Moulavi Abbas Ansari quit and handed over charge to the Mirwaiz.

The APHC, a collection of Kashmiri outfits fighting for freedom, has been wracked by dissensions within it ranks. It split vertically when pro-Pak Jamaat-e-Islami led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani formed a parallel APHC.

The Hurriyat under Moulavi Ansari's leadership entered into a high-profile dialogue with the Union government, a move that Geelani opposed.

"There has been some misunderstanding...I will not function as interim chairman of the Hurriyat," Mirwaiz said.

"My responsibility would be to talk to all the members of the erstwhile undivided Hurriyat so that the constitutional shape of the body is restored," he added.

"There will be no interim chairman of the Hurriyat. Fresh elections would be held once the executive council takes its
original shape," he added.
