Assam flood situation grim; toll 52

The overall flood situation in Assam continued to remain grim with the rivers, including the Brahmaputra, flowing above the danger level affecting nearly 75 lakh people.

In one of the worst ever floods in the state, 25 of the 27 districts remained inundated.

Two more people injured in the massive landslide around Guwahati city succumbed taking the overall death toll to 52.

The situation was at its worst in lower Assam with almost the entire area inundated necessitating massive relief and rehabilitation work, including evacuation by IAF helicopters and speed boats, official sources said.

The state government has announced there was adequate stock of food grains and other essentials as well as medicines to prevent outbreak of epidemics.

Road and rail communication in various areas continued to remain disrupted even as the government set up nearly 1,500 relief camps to house affected people.
