Hard-line Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani was on Friday put under house arrest, as he was planning to hold demonstrations against the alleged rape of a woman and her daughter by an army officer at Handwara in Jammu and Kashmir, official sources in Srinagar said.
A police team reached Geelani's Haiderpora residence in the wee hours and informed him about the prohibitory orders passed on him.
The sources said Geelani was planning to lead anti-government protests at a mosque in Srinagar against the incident.
The Major, Rehman Hussain, was suspended and placed under "close arrest" on Thursday by Army Chief General N C Vij. The blood samples of the accused and the victims were also sent to Central Forensic Laboratory at Chandigarh for DNA testing.
