A three-tier security blanket has been thrown around the Sher-e-Kashmir cricket stadium, where Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address a public meeting on Wednesday -- the first Congress PM to do so in Kashmir in 17 years.
"We have followed the normal security drill that is required for such a high profile visit," Senior Superintendent of Police, Srinagar, Syed Javed Mujtaba Gilani said.
Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had addressed a public meeting at the same venue in April 2002.
Traffic diversions have been effected on all the routes to be undertaken by the PM during his one-day visit to the Valley. A round-the-clock vigil is being maintained and security forces have been deployed on rooftops of several buildings.
Electronic surveillance is also in place on the routes to be taken by the PM and the security forces have started checking vehicles entering and leaving the city.
The PM will visit the holy Hazratbal shrine, which houses a relic of Prophet Mohammed, along the banks of Dal Lake.
Singh will also attend the convocation ceremony at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences besides interacting with the faculty of Kashmir University.
He will address a press conference in the evening before heading for Jammu the next morning.
