Kashmir varsity can look forward to south campus

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has approved the project plan for the South Campus of Kashmir University for which over 15 hectares of land has been acquired at Fatehgarh near Anantnag.

The project costing Rs seven crore was approved in Srinagar at the apex body meeting of Kashmir University, chaired by Sayeed, who is also its pro-chancellor.

Chief Secretary Sudhir S Bloeria, Kashmir University Vice-Chancellor Abdul Wahid and the chief minister's Principal Secretary Vijay Bakaya also attended the meeting.

It was decided that under the first phase, administrative, science, bio-tech and the IT blocks, besides work on the residential quarters for teaching and non-teaching staff would be taken up so that the campus is made operational on time. Work on a dispensary, shopping centre and other facilities may also be taken up simultaneously.

The chief minister stressed on the need for adopting ideal systems for academic and residential infrastructure in accordance with future requirements of the university.

Sayeed also urged for early release of Rs three crore each for the North Campus (at Delina, Baramulla) and South Campus.

He suggested that the two campuses introduce job market-oriented courses keeping in mind the valley's potential.

The chief minister asked the university authorities to gear up executing agencies for timely completion of a convention complex, additional science and distant education blocks and the Sheikh-ul-aalam Centre coming up in the Kashmir

University's main campus in Srinagar.

Abdul Wahid apprised the chief minister about the working of the various faculties of Kashmir University and efforts to strengthen its infrastructure.

He said the Naseem Bagh University campus would in September host inter-university sports events and coaching courses for the entrance exam to combined services.
