The heavy rains and floods in Maharashtra in the past 10 days have claimed 1,056 lives, including 452 in Mumbai, while property worth over Rs 9,000 crore was damaged, official sources said in Mumbai on Saturday.

Mumbai accounted for the maximum number of deaths, followed by Thane with 173 and Raigad with 165, Mantralaya sources said, adding that about 152 people were injured and more than 50 were still missing.

Over two lakh people were evacuated due to floods in many parts of the state while relief and rescue operations had been undertaken on a war-footing, the sources said.

The state's infrastructure also suffered a big blow with 33,417 km of roads destroyed, requiring over Rs 1,000 crore towards repairs and reconstruction, according to the state Public Works Department Minister Chhagan Bhujbal.

Floods have also completely uprooted 332 km stretch of road across the state and another 353 km road network have cracked open, Bhujbal told reporters.

The state Relief and Rehabilitation Department sources said that 33 of the total 35 districts were hit by heavy rains and floods.

Meanwhile, the weather office has predicted moderate rain or shower in the city and suburbs and isolated heavy rains in Thane and Raigad districts till Sunday morning.
