The World Islamic Students League on Wednesday organised protests in Maisuma and some other areas near Srinagar against the gunning down of a 27-year-old car mechanic by Border Security Force jawans in Magam.
Zahoor Ahmed Bhat was killed and his two friends injured on Sunday when BSF personnel opened fire on their car after it allegedly jumped a traffic signal. Bhat was on his way home from Gulmarg with his friends.
Large groups of students raised anti-BSF and anti-government slogans on the streets. Shops and business establishments remained closed in Maisuma and adjoining areas of Srinagar, police sources said. The police used teargas to disperse the protestors and detained eight of them.
The BSF has claimed a shot was fired from the car after it jumped the signal. Bhat's friends, however, deny this. They have also said they could not see the traffic signal because of fog.
Bhat had recently donated blood for tsunami victims.
