The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway has been closed again following fresh snowfall and landslides on Tuesday.
Nearly 40 jawans from the army, Indo-Tibetan Border Force, Central Reserve Police Force and the Indian Reserve Police, escaped when two avalanches struck the Jawahar Tunnel on Monday, the sources added.
The avalanches blocked the southern end of the tunnel leaving around 300 vehicles stranded, the sources said, adding that all the stranded passengers and their vehicles were moved to safe places.
The Snow Avalanche Study Establishment has warned of fresh avalanches on the highway and also sounded red alert in avalanche-prone zones.
The highway was open for one-way traffic despite fresh snowfall on Monday.
