Bilkis Bano, prime witness in the Dahod gang rape-cum-massacre case, on Friday informed the trial court in Mumbai that the Gujarat police had never read out to her any of the three statements she had given to them.

Bilkis was gang raped and her relatives were murdered by a mob at Dahod in Gujarat on March three, 2002 in the post-Godhra riots.

Bilkis said she wondered why the Gujarat police chose not to record her statements accurately, Special Public Prosecutor R K Shah said.

The defence earlier pointed out to Bilkis that she had failed to tell the police in her statements that she was residing with her father at Randhikpur village and used to help him sell milk.

Bilkis said she had told this to the police, but since the statements were never read out to her she was not aware what was recorded, the prosecution said.

Bilkis also said she had told the Gujarat police that her aunt Sughra Bibi was the one who had asked her and her relatives to flee her village. She said she did not know why the police had not recorded it.

The matter has been adjourned to March 9 and her cross-examination would continue then.
