The Goa state assembly Speaker Vishwas Satarkar and his deputy Narhari Haldankar on Monday resigned from their posts just minutes after the House met to take up a confidence vote moved by the Pratapsinh Rane-led Congress government.
The assembly has now been adjourned sine die.
Both Satarkar and Haldankar belong to the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party.
Satarkar said he was resigning to protest against the false allegations made against him by Governor S C Jamir, Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane and All India Congress Committee general secretary Margaret Alva.
Monday's developments have added another chapter in the sordid saga of Goa's politics.
On February 2, the previous BJP government led by Monohar Parrikar was dismissed by Governor S C Jamir within minutes of it winning a controversial confidence vote. The same day, a Congress-led government was sworn in.
Both the speaker and the governor had come in for criticism from constitutional experts for their actions.
