The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday announced that the booty of Rs 1.5 lakh on the slain dacoit Nirbhay Gujjar's head would be given to the village pradhan of Amawat. He had given the police information about the dacoit's wherabouts, leading to his killing in the encounter.
Speaking to newsmen, Akhil Kumar, Senior Superintendent of Police, Special Task Force said the police would not stake claim for the reward. Kumar had led the team, which killed Gujjar in the ravines of Etawah district on the night of October 7.
Kumar said the pradhan gave correct information about the whereabouts of Gujjar, which enabled the STF team to track him.
Adequate security has been provided to the Pradhan Lala Ram, he said. Kumar said that the STF team had been gathering information about Gujjar's movement for the last six months but the exact information about his whereabouts reached the team at about 1400 hours on Monday.
The team then rushed to Etawah. Meanwhile, according to a report from Etawah, Gujjar was cremated on the banks of Yamuna river late Tuesday night.
The body had been handed over to the family members of the slain dacoit on Tuesday, the report said, adding that Gujjar's younger brother lit the pyre.
