The three-member committee headed by Neera Yadav, chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh Board of Revenue, on Monday began its probe into communal riots, which had broken out in the Mau district of the state on October 14.
The probe committee was instituted by the UP government after the district officials were suspended for laxity in their duty. The state government had, in the state assembly, rejected the demand of CBI probe saying any decision in this regard would be taken only after the committee submitted its report.
Yadav, the former chief secretary of the state, would hold discussions with district officials and a section of people to find out the reasons behind the riots.
District officials told UNI that the committee would submit its report to the state government soon.
As many as eight persons were killed in the riots in Mau, which remained under curfew for about one month.
Meanwhile, the situation in the town was normal after a stray incident over an alleged molestation case, sources said.
