Around 90,000 people have been affected and over 100 villages and huge tracts of paddy land inundated in Orissa's Balasore district following floods in the Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers, official sources said.
The floods, triggered by heavy rains in the catchment areas of the rivers since Sunday night, had particularly affected the north Balasore blocks of Basta, Bhograi, Baliapal and Jaleswar.
About 300 persons had been evacuated from their homes in Bhograi block and taken to safer places.
They had been accomodated in 11 cyclone shelters, the sources said. The Subarnarekha had caused several breaches on the embankments inundating villages under 27 panchayats including Khardipal, Rasulpur, Badapal, Palchampei, Chadabadhapal, Suryapur, Nikhira and Nachhinda, they said.
The Subarnarekha and Jalaka rivers were flowing above the red mark while the Budhabalanga was receding.
An official spokesman said block development officers had been directed to distribute relief material available with them while several power boats had been mobilised for rescue and relief operations.
Two units of the Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force had also been deployed in the area, he said. Balasore District Collector Temjen Wapang Ao also visited the flood-hit areas.
Meanwhile, the flood situation continues to be critical in Sangli and Kolhapur districts of Maharashtra prompting authorities to deploy the army in Shirol taluka to evacuate 10,000 people to safer places, even as the situation has improved in Satara, Solapur and Pune where nine people have died since Saturday, official sources said on Tuesday.
On Monday night around 10,000 people were shifted from flood-hit areas of the district, Collector Praveen Darade said adding, 11 villages continue to remain cut off.
The situation is critical but under control and no casualty has been reported from Kolhapur, he added.
"We have already evacuated 11,000 people from various parts of the district." Darade said.
Panchganga river was in spate at Rajaram Bhandara in Kolhapur city, sources said.
In Sangli, over 75,000 people were evacuated following floods in Krishna river.
At least four people were killed in Sangli (Pulush taluka (2), Valva taluka (1) and Miraj taluka (1)) due to floods.
With rains relenting in Satara district, most of the 1,148 people, who were evacuated from Patan taluka, have returned home, official sources said.
However, 4,608 people shifted from Karad taluka were still at the relief camps.
The Krishna bridge at Karad, which was closed following the floods would be opened on Tuesday afternoon, they said.
Two women in Satara's Wai taluka and two children in Khatau taluka had died due to floods in the district in the last two days, sources said.
The situation in Pune was also improving with the discharge of water from Khadakwasla dam being reduced, Resident Deputy Collector Suhas Divse said adding, one death was reported from Baramati taluka.
The local administration has shifted nearly 295 flood-hit families from Pimpri-Chinchwad and 175 families from Pune city since Saturday, following floods in the low-lying areas of the two twin cities.
Meanwhile, the pilgrimage town of Pandarpur in Solapur district and Malshiras taluka were still inundated, Collector Govind Raj said adding, rains have diminished in the past 24 hours which has helped the administration to carry out relief operations.
Nearly 2,500 people have been evacuated from Solapur due to floods in Bhima and Neera rivers.
