An inmate of the Central Prison in south-central Mumbai was killed and three others were injured in a clash between two rival groups inside the high security jail on Saturday morning.

John D'souza, an undertrial, was killed while three others have been rushed to nearby J J Hospital following the clash at Barrack No. 4 in the jail, Deputy Commissioner of Police Panjabrao Ugle told PTI.

"We suspect that the clash broke out as one group of robbers tipped off the police regarding the activities of the rival group. Further details will be available only after the interrogation of the three injured," Ugle said.

Ugle denied that members of any organised crime syndicate like the Dawood Ibrahim or Chhota Rajan gangs were involved in the clash.

The jail located at Arthur Road in south-central Mumbai houses over 1,500 undertrials, including members of the Dawood Ibrahim, Chhota Rajan gangs and persons convicted in the 1993 serial blasts case.
