The central government on Monday said its move to erect a bulletproof structure around the idol of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya is only to protect the structure and assured that it will not tinker with the status quo of the structure.

Five terrorists who tried to storm the complex were shot down in July 2005.

"The status quo of the structure is not to be tinkered with. Only security is to be strengthened. And, what has to be done will be in keeping with the Supreme Court's directive as also sensitivities of all communities," Union Home Secretary V K Duggal said.

He was responding to questions on the reservations expressed by Muslim organisations about the government's request to the Supreme Court to allow bulletproofing of the idol of Ram Lalla.

Duggal said the expert committee comprised, among others, Uttar Pradesh's chief secretary and director-general of police.

He said following the attack, it was decided to enhance the security not only in Ayodhya, but also other complexes including the Taj Mahal in Agra, the Dargah at Ajmer Sharif, the Kashi Vishwanath Gyanvapi complex and the Krishna Janmabhoomi-Shahi Mosque in Mathura.

"Everybody will be satisfied with the security arrangements. It will be as per the Supreme Court directive. The idea is to ensure peace and harmony among all communities," he added.
