Terrorists on Saturday morning ambushed an army convoy on the strategic Srinagar-Jammu highway, injuring four army troopers.
The police said terrorists hurled a grenade at the convoy before firing from automatic weapons at Chersoo village, 35 km from Srinagar.
Two injured troopers are stated to be in a serious condition. They have been evacuated for treatment to Srinagar even as traffic on the highway remained disrupted. Security forces cordoned off the attack site and have mounted searches in the area.
The convoy was on its way to Jammu from Srinagar.
The militant attack comes at a time when President A P J Abdul KalamĀ is on a two day visit and a general shut down called by separatist hard line leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani crippled life for a second consecutive day.
The President, meanwhile, inaugurated the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Jammu and Kashmir high court at the Sheri Kashmir International Conference Centre situated on the banks of Dal Lake in the highest security zone of Srinagar.
The entire 7-km stretch from Dalgate to Nishat has been taken over by the army, paramilitary and local police forces, who have sealed the area.
