The Centre is considering the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government, particularly in the wake of allegations of massive rigging during recent local body polls, Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal has said.
"The proposal to dismiss the Uttar Pradesh government is under serious consideration. The Centre cannot behave like a hapless spectator and will exercise its constitutional rights," he told reporters on Saturday evening.
"Almost all opposition parties have demanded the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government after the alleged massive rigging in recent civic polls," he said.
Asked about the role of the State Election Commission during the polls, Jaiswal said that he had full faith in the institution but whatever happened during the polls was there for all to see.
State Congress chief Salman Khurshid, who was also present with Jaiswal, said the party will launch a massive 'jail bharo' protest on November 20.
The party will also lay siege to the state Assembly on November 27 to protest rigging and booth capturing in the recent polls, Khursheed said.
