In a significant development on Sunday night, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Lok Janshakti Party, key partners of the ruling United Progressive Alliance at the Centre, said they would support the Congress line on imposition of President's Rule in Uttar Pradesh.
The DMK disowned a statement made by a party spokesman that it was opposed to such a move.
DMK president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who held discussions with Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue, later told PTI over telephone that his party would accept any decision taken by Congress.
"I hope Congress will take a right and good decision," he said.
Asked whether his party would support any decision taken by the Congress, he said: "Oh yes."
Karunanidhi said he discussed the issue with Sonia and Dr Singh on Sunday.
Earlier, the party headquarters said the remarks of spokesman T K S Elangovan that it was opposed to use of Article 356 of the Constitution in Uttar Pradesh was not the party's official view.
"It was not an official view of DMK," a press release issued by the party headquarters said.
Elangovan had earlier said the party was opposed to any move to dismiss the Mulayam Singh Yadav government as its stand has always been against the use of Article 356 to impose President's Rule in any state.
"There is no change in the party's stand on the use of the Article," Elangovan had said adding, when Mulayam Singh has offered to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly, he should be allowed to do so.
LJP president Ram Vilas Paswan also came out in support of removal of Mulayam Singh government saying the chief minister should not be given the chance to prove his majority in the Assembly as it would lead to horse-trading.
