The chairman of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, urged the international community on Thursday to 'influence' India and Pakistan to accelerate their peace process to resolve the Kashmir issue.
"The international community should use its influence to speed up the ongoing talks between India and Pakistan to find an everlasting and fair solution to the long-standing Kashmir issue," Mirwaiz told a visiting British envoys' delegation.
The three-member delegation of Sara Lampert, Liz Kane and Sushil Aaron arrived on Thursday afternoon on a fact-finding mission and visited the Rajbagh headquarters of the amalgam.
Mirwaiz also alleged that 'human rights violations by security forces' are continuing in Jammu and Kashmir and there is an urgent need to put an end to them.
Besides Mirwaiz, the Hurriyat was represented at the meeting by senior leaders Fazal Haq Qureshi, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and Shabir Ahmad Dar who discussed in detail the ongoing talks process with regard to resolution of Kashmir issue and other related matters, a spokesman of the amalgam said.
Mirwaiz said the Hurriyat extends full support to the ongoing Indo-Pak dialogue process and considers the four-point formula for Kashmir solution put forth by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf as 'practicable and appropriate'.
He told the envoys that demilitarisation in Jammu and Kashmir could be a milestone in resolving the Kashmir issue and also talked on the importance of 'involvement of Kashmiris' in the dialogue process.
Meanwhile, president of Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Forum Bhushan Bazaz appealed on Thursday to the centre not to outrightly reject the demand for demilitarisation and also favoured an informal ceasefire in the state.
