The Election Commission on Saturday said the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh will be conducted under the supervision of central paramilitary forces with the police taking care of the situation elsewhere in the state.
Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalaswamy, who is in the state to review election preparations in Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi divisions, told reporters that elections will be held on the pattern of Bihar and West Bengal polls and any attempt to disturb it will not be tolerated.
Gopalaswamy said the EC is holding discussions with state authorities on the issue of deployment of additional forces along the Indo-Nepal border, adding equal forces will be deployed in all other districts.
The state government has been directed to shift the superintendents of police and district magistrates posted in their native districts at the earliest, he said.
Expressing satisfaction over the preparations in Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Jhansi, he said work on photo identity cards is almost complete, adding no one will be allowed to cast votes without them.
