Police have installed video cameras and metal detectors as part of enhanced security measures at Mecca Masjid, where an explosion killed 11 persons last week, and other mosques in the city.

Police Commissioner Balwinder Singh on Wednesday said adequate security arrangements have been made at Mecca Masjid and other mosques to enable the general public to offer prayers peacefully.

In consultation with the Masjid Committee management, video cameras have been installed at Mecca Majid and other important mosques to keep surveillance over anti-social elements, he said.

Besides video cameras, door frames, metal detectors and hand held metal detectors are being deployed for anti-sabotage checks, Singh said.

The commissioner appealed to the public to cooperate with the police and not carry handbags or any other items while coming to offer prayers.

A Special Investigation Cell, headed by DIG Harishkumar Gupta, is probing the blast.

Meanwhile, Station House Officers of Mogalpura and Falaknuma police stations, under whose jurisdiction the Mecca Masjid area falls, have been transferred. The step was taken in view of a magisterial inquiry into the police firing on restive crowds after the blast. Five persons were killed in the police firing.
