As tension prevailed in Nandigram, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Monday asked for Central forces to tackle the situation in the troubled areas while the Trinamool Congress demanded the state government's dismissal.
"Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil called me on Sunday to enquire about the situation at Nandigram. I sought the deployment of the Central Recruitment Police Force," Bhattacharjee said.
He said the government, however, was not considering deployment of the Army at Nandigram, where four persons were killed since Saturday when fresh violence erupted. Bhattacharjee said he was hopeful for a political solution to the issue.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who was held up at Contai in troubled-torn east Midnapore district, due to a bandh called by the CPI(M), demanded intervention by the Centre and a CBI enquiry into the alleged firing on her convoy when she was travelling to Nandigram.
Maintaining that her party also wanted a political solution on the issue, Banerjee, however, ruled out talks with Bhattacharjee.
"I will prefer death to sit for talks with Bhattacharjee. You are asking me to sit for talks when Nandigram is on the boil and he is responsible for state-sponsored terrorism," she said.
