A fresh eruption of riots in a volatile Tibetan-inhabited region in south-west China has left at least one official seriously injured amid reports that the government would soon commence trials against people allegedly involved in the unrest last month.

The new violence broke out on Thursday night in the Tibetan autonomous prefecture of Garze in south-west China's Sichuan province, which was last month also rocked by riots following the fiercest pro-independence protests in two decades in the Tibetan capital Lhasa.

One official was "attacked and seriously wounded" during the riots in Garze on Thursday night, the official Xinhua news agency reported on Friday.

It gave no further details. During last month's riots, Xinhua had reported that protesters had attacked police with knives and stones leading to the death of one policeman.

China is expected to put on a swift trial soon for Tibetans charged with involvement in riots during the monks-spearheaded anti-government protests that had brought Beijing under global spotlight.

The 'Tibet Commerce' reported that more than 1,000 people had either been arrested or surrendered for their role in the riots, adding that trials of some would commence this month.
