The Delhi police are taking no chances with security for the Olympic torch, which is being kept at the Le Meridian hotel.
"We are keeping our fingers crossed and we are not sharing information with the media. You can see things for yourself and arrive at your own conclusion," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Rajan Bhagat.
Sources in intelligence agencies revealed that security has been beefed up after Tibetans tried to storm the Chinese Embassy yet again on Wednesday. On Wednesday night, Tibetans held noisy demonstrations outside the hotel after the Olympic torch had arrived.
In 1964, when the relay torch arrived in India, only a handful of policeman were manning the route from the airport to the place where it was kept, Gurbachan Singh Randhawa told rediff.com, "It is a great honour to run for one's country, first in 1964 and many more times later on including this one". Delhi Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit, anticipating trouble, has decided that the children who had been asked to line up for the torch on both sides of Rajpath would now see the ceremony at India Gate. The route of the torch is still being kept a secret.
