West Bengal flood situation grim
The flood situation in West Bengal's Midnapore district continues
to be grim. Vast areas are still underwater, affecting over 350,000 people.
State Irrigation Minister Ganesh Mondal said although
the flood waters have receded in Midnapore town, no improvement
was reported in the submerged Panskura, Ghatal, Daspur and Debra
areas.
He said after a respite of four days, the Kangsabati dam authorities had again discharged 10,000 cusecs of water on Tuesday. Besides, 56,000 cusecs had been released from the Damodar Valley Corporation barrage at Durgapur.
The situation in North Bengal was almost normal. However, heavy erosion along the five-km embankment of the Ganga has been reported from Gopalpur area in Malda district.
A three-km stretch of the Fulahar embankment has also suffered erosion in the same district.
