'Shiney is being treated like any other accused'

June 16, 2009 18:41 IST
As actor Shiney Ahuja [ Images ] faces serious charges including rape, his lawyer Shrikant Shivade fields Nithya Ramani's questions on the case.

Interestingly, Shivade also represented Colonel Shrikant Purohit, one of the accused in the Malegaon blasts [ Images ] case.

The Mumbai [ Images ] police claims Shiney has admitted to rape. The medical report on Tuesday confirms this.

Any statement given by any accused in front of police officers is not valid. So media reports saying that he has confessed to having raped the victim is false. The media can say anything, but his statement in front of the police officers is not valid in a court of law.

Did you meet Shiney? What does he have to say?

Yes, I met him. He says he is innocent.

What was Shiney's condition when you met him in the lock-up?

He is being treated like any other accused. Nobody has seen him being treated like a VIP, so you cannot believe media reports.

What evidence do you have to defend Shiney?

I cannot reveal that. We will fight the case only after the chargesheet is filed. The chargesheet can be filed within 90 days. Let's see what happens after that.

After that, we will think about the evidence and see what has to be done.
