Some experts feel that Malayalam has got stuck in a time warp. And Kancheepurathe Kalyaanam is one such example.
The film directed by duo Fazil and Jayakrishnan proves to be a rehash of a decade old theme of fun films set against a Tamilian backdrop -- the kind specialised by Siddique-Lal and gang like Thenkashipattanam and Thommanum Makkallum. And to top it all, the latest movie stars two middle aged heroes with a heroine who looks to be barely out of her teens.
The story too is predictable. We have two heroes who are enemies -- one angry, the other sissy. Achuthan Kutty (Suresh Gopi) is angry because his closest friend Najeeb (Mukesh) had eloped with his younger sister, who had some problem in her horoscope. Achuthan Kutty and Najeeb were business partners running an event management company named Friends Event Managers. After the marriage, the friendship suffers. Najeeb continues with same business by adding the word 'New' to his company.
The animosity continues when the duo are thrown together once again when Achuthan Kutty gets an offer from a Mudaliar baron (Jagathy Sreekumar) in Kancheepuram to handle the marriage of his niece Meenakshi (Muktha), the heiress to all the businesses looked after by Mudaliar. Achuthan Kutty takes the contract on the condition that half of the business will be handled by his brother-in-law, Najeeb.
From here on the story proceeds in a predictable way with scores of characters, comedy, deceit, action, romance and reconciliation.
We can't blame the makers much because they stick to a formula that is made to provide 'a guffaw a minute'. But, you get to hear a few boos too in between.
Coming to the main cast, Suresh Gopi tries (yet again) his luck in comedy and fails. Mukesh tries hard to be a foil to Suresh Gopi's character, but he too fails. Muktha has perpetually 'what am I doing here' kind of expression on her face. That leaves the supporting cast consisting of Jagathy Sreekumar, Harisree Asokan and Jagadeesh to salvage the movie.
The verdict? Better stick to reruns of Thenkashipattanam and Thommanum Makkallum on television.
