Telugu film Om is for Kalyan Ram fans, writes Radhika Rajamani.
Nandamuri Kalyan Ram is back with the much awaited Om shot in 3D, touted as the first action film in the country in that format. He has produced the film and plays the lead role in it.
With technicians from America and Canada, besides the best of local talent and hard work, Kalyan Ram has been able to pull off a fairly watchable commercial action entertainer directed by Suneel Reddy.
Some of the action sequences are quite an experience to watch in 3D but on the whole, 3D effects seemed unnecessary for this tale.
Story wise, the film follows the regular formula. It’s a revenge drama, with high-voltage violence. In fact, it’s quite gory at times and 3D accentuates the violence.
Arjun (Kalyan Ram) is the son of Harishchandra Prasad (Karthik). Harishchandra locks horns with the politician Byreddy (Rao Ramesh) who tries to kill Harishchandra but the latter is always saved by his son Arjun. Byreddy later gets hold of Bhavani Shankar to do away with Harishchandra and his son.

In the process of seeking revenge, Arjun comes to know of certain important truths about his life which really shake him up. The film’s narrative goes back and forth – from present to flashback. There are some twists and turns that are interesting.
It’s a routine story so there’s no new element. The film is fast-paced as befits an action film. Thankfully, the running time is not very long.
The focus is on action and that supersedes everything else. The movie rides on its special effects but these are inconsistent—really good sometimes and not so good at others.
Kalyan Ram’s performance is good. Kriti Kharbanda and Nikesha Patel do not have much to do. Kriti looks pretty and Nikesha adds the oomph. Karthik does a good job as the father. Suresh is fine as the uncle.
Goutham Raju has edited the film well, restricting the running time. On other technical fronts, the film scores above average.
Om can be watched once and Kalyan Ram’s fans have a reason to rejoice -- they can see their hero in full form on screen after three years!
