Trailer Review: Get ready for Ant-Man

The Ant-ManThere’s something extraordinary about Michael Douglas’s voice.

We’ve heard it many a times over the years, that drawl that always, always implies he knows far more than we do, that he’s smarter than we are, that he’s seen our cards.

And now he’s kicking off the trailer to Marvel’s newest superhero film by talking to Paul Rudd and inviting him to be a superhero, “the one his daughter already thinks he is.”

The idea of a mentor hero bringing aboard a new kid to carry on the legacy might not be a very new superhero trope -- but showing Michael Douglas (and a younger Douglas lookalike) as the old Ant-Man, Henry Pym, explaining the ropes to Rudd’s Scott Lang is an effective idea which should hopefully translate to less backstory in the film.

Fingers crossed.

The action looks good but not spectacular (yet), the outfit looks fine. Evangeline Lilly looks great.

But right now, it’s hard to get too thrilled about Ant-Man because it looks to be following the Marvel tentpole-template to a tee.

It’s hard to imagine Edgar Wright, the director who was recently removed from the project, putting out a trailer this boringly efficient and this lacking in personality.

Yet perhaps Rudd will surprise us.

At least he ends the trailer with a great line.

Ant-Man hits theatres July 17.
