Malayalam actor Jayasurya is on a roll. With the success of his Ivar Vivahitharayal, Jayasurya is in great demand as a solo hero in Malayalam. Of course, besides the solo hero projects, he is balancing his career with supporting roles and also the negative ones. Perhaps his willingness to experiement has worked to his advantage.

Right now he is shooting for V K Prakash's Gulumaal, with Kunchacko Boban also in the lead. He is also doing Joshiy's Robinhood, with Prithviraj and Narain and many other projects as well.

In an exclusive interview to Meghna George, Jayasurya talks about his life after Ivar Vivahitharayal, and more. Excerpts:

Did you expect Ivar Vivahitharayal to do so well at the box office?

[Smiles] Of course we wanted the film to do well, but the response has been even beyond our expectations. Ivar Vivahitharayal is doing very well and it all started with splendid initials.

What do you think worked in its favour?

From the catchy title to the good storyline to the four well made songs, Ivar Vivahitharayal had several things going in its favour. There were certain surprise factors as well like the three heroines, for instance. Even before the film released, there was a curiosity factor as to who is the actual heroine in the film.

Are things happening great in your career?

True, Kunchacko Boban and myself are teaming up for V K Prakash's Gulumaal. I am playing a cop in Joshiy's Robinhood and there are films like Joshy Mathew's Pathamnilayile Theevandi and M A Nishad's Vairam. Swathi Bhaskar's Currency, which got released recently. I am happy with the way my career is going right now.

With so many roles being done simultaneously, how can you get into the skin of each character so easily?

That's expected from me as an actor and I give my best for it. I experiment on my looks and that has been helpful in getting the characters registered more easily in the minds of the viewers and more importantly, it gives me more confidence as well.

What do you think are your strong points as an actor?

Frankly, I don't know about it and I am not too bothered about what others think about me, beyond a point. The best thing is that I can do any kind of roles without bothering about any image. I am not trapped in any image. I am only thinking about how to improve each role of mine. I am looking forward to really good, performance oriented roles.

Did your stint as a mimicry performer help you in handling your variety of roles?

Not much. In films, you become the character for around 45 days or so, and it is totally different from mimicry.

Of late, Malayalam films are being criticised for not experimenting like other languages. Why so?

Perhaps there is some truth to it, but things are improving. Films like Passenger have brought it in some difference. The audiences are back in the theatres after a while and let's hope things will get better from now on.
