The brilliant Naseeruddin Shah performed Dastangoi: The Adventures of Amir Hamza with Mahmood Farooqi and Daanish Hussain at the Asia Society New York on Monday.
The adventures of Amir Hamza -- Prophet Mohammad's uncle -- is full of tales of magic, sorcery, warriors and tricksters. The traditional storyteller narrates the trials and triumphs of Hamza, creating a fascinating world through a combination of poetry and acting.
Naseer's wife, Ratna Pathak Shah, looked radiant at the event.
Hailed by critics as 'an enthralling revival of a dying tradition,' Dastangoi is a rich form of traditional, dramatized Urdu storytelling that dates back to medieval Iran (Persia) and which has recently regained critical acclaim due to the work of distinguished scholar Mahmood Farooqi.
