'For all Roger Ebert has done for cinema: Two thumbs up'

Renowned film critic Roger Ebert, revered for his striking and widely-regarded reviews, passed away after a decade-long battle with cancer in Chicago.

One of only three film critics to win a Pulitzer Prize and idol of millions of film buffs around the world, Ebert commanded respect among the top echelons of not only Hollywood but the Indian film industry too.

The news set off a barrage of tributes on Twitter, many of which came from Bollywood and Hollywoiod celebrities.

Abhishek Bachchan wrote: 'Very sad loss for all movie lovers. RIP Roger Ebert.'

Kahaani director Sujoy Ghosh: 'RIP roger ebert... reviewer... teacher. even when you don't know a person its weird how they are a part of your life.'

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu director Shakun Batra posted: 'big loss! RIP Roger Ebert. One of the greatest student and master of films. For everything you have done for cinema - two thumbs up!'

Model and Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi posted: 'So sad to loose Roger Ebert. Grew up learning about films as a child through his work. RIP #moviehistory'

Hollywood celebrities also took to Twitter to express grief over Ebert's passing away.

Veteran comedian and playwright Steve Martin: 'Goodbye Roger Ebert, we had fun. The balcony is closed.'

Comedian and TV show host Jimmy Kimmel: 'Roger Ebert was an excellent writer, a gifted artist, and as nice a guy as you'll ever meet. Sad he's gone.'

Black Swan director Darren Aronofsky: 'we lost a thoughtful writer, i remember my first review from him, pi (i got his and siskel's thumbs) it was a career highlight.'

Filmmaker Edgar Wright: "This is my happening and it freaks me out". Roger Ebert wrote the truly incredible Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls. He is beyond a legend.'
