Sanjay Dutt, Salman-SRK, Dhoom: Bollywood's newsmakers of 2013

Each year descends upon us with its own share of highs and lows and in matters concerning Bollywood, they keep more people on their toes than the affected parties.

The year 2013 was a mixed bag -- a large part was marked with a general celebratory mood (more on that inside). A few unfortunate turn of events and controversies, however momentary, rocked the Bollywood boat too.

Here then, is a look back at Bollywood stars and incidents that made major headlines in 2013.

The jail-bound star

Sanjay Dutt's incarceration in the arms possession case came as a rude shock to him and his family.

While he did manage to get an extension of four weeks on his date of surrender and has already been out on parole twice, his ordeal is far from over.

He walked in the Arthur Road Central Prison on May 17 this year with the Bhagwad Gita and Ramayana books for company and was later shifted to Yerwada jail in Pune.

Indian cinema entered its centenary year on May 3 with the grandiose fervour it is universally associated with.

Grand tributes were paid to mark the occasion in the country as well as at various film festivals around the world.

Bombay Talkies, an anthology of four short films directed by Karan Johar, Anurag Kashyap, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee was released to celebrate the feat.

The country woke up to a rude shock on the morning of June 4 when Jiah Khan was found dead in her Juhu flat in Mumbai.

The 25-year-old actress had, initial reports suggested, been depressed about lack of acting assignments but the tragic story soon took a murkier turn when her alleged former boyfriend Suraj Pancholi entered the scene.

According to Jiah's mother Rabiya Khan, Aditya Pancholi's aspiring actor son had reportedly pushed her to commit suicide, leading to his arrest.

Pran, the great character actor from golden age of Hindi cinema, breathed his last in July this year.

While his last rites was attended by practically the entire film industry, the 93-year-old veteran's sendoff was marked by numerous tributes from his former colleagues and admirers.

Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan quietly welcomed their third child -- son AbRam, born through surrogacy -- in July.

While the happy occasion was marred with needless BMC hassles and media pests, Shah Rukh and family has, unlike other star parents, kept their youngest child away from media glare so far.

Baba Siddiqui's Iftaar party saw two rival Khans exchange a warm hug and pleasantries in late July.

While many hoped this would put an end to the rift between Salman and SRK, the stars gave their own versions of what happened at the do to clear the air.

Truly a very high-voltage incident that ended on a very disappointing note.

Mallika Sherawat is a walking PR machinery and she proved it this year, yet again, if we might add.

First off, her rendition of the seductive Happy Birthday song (presumably fashioned after Marylin Monroe's song for former US president John F Kennedy) for PM hopeful Narendra Modi went viral.

But whatever she may feel for Indian leaders, she obviously doesn't think much about the people in her country.

Mallika called India a regressive society during an interview at the Cannes International Film Festival, and defended her stance at every opportunity she got -- from Twitter to a recent press conference.

She then entered the Bachelorette India reality show.

Well, enough said already.

Much has been written about the Jai Ho actor's appearance on the show already.

But given the unprecedented nature of this surprise, people understandably couldn't get enough of the episode and hung on to every word that escaped Khan's mouth on the inaugural episode.

Who doesn't love a 48-year-old virgin, after all.

High school romances go awry.

We might not be able to come to terms with such hard truths of life but Hrithik Roshan and his love of 17 years Sussanne Khan Roshan sure did after living separately for months.

The couple officially announced their split a few days before their 13th wedding anniversary in December.
