PIX: Bollywood's Stars in UNIFORM

Last updated on: May 1, 2013 13:37 IST

Summer holidays may have just kicked in but Bollywood's ready to go back to school.

If Sonam Nair's Gippi explores the adventures of a gawky young girl during the 'age of change' struggling to slip into her uniform, Sonam Kapoor easily passes off for a 15-year-old in pigtails and checkered pinafore in Dhanush-starrer, Raanjhnaa.

Adorable, right? How about a look at some of our other uniform-clad actors on screen? Here you go:

Student of the Year

Before producing Gippi, Karan Johar captured life in campus (and a supremely lavish one at that) with his high school romance starring newcomers -- Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Siddharth Malhotra.

Of course, the musical plays out more like a fantasy with its state-of-art cafeteria and classrooms and students in smart blazers.

Always Kabhi Kabhi

Johar's buddy Shah Rukh Khan too tried his hands at telling a sweet story about a quartet of pristinely-presented teens against the backdrop of school life in Always Kabhi Kabhi.

The upshot, however, was always 'meh' not just kabhi kabhi.

Well Done Abba

Not all uniforms subscribe to the western dress code.

In Shyam Benegal's Well Done Abba, Minissha Lamba's Muskaan Ali attends school in the more demure salwar-kameez keeping with the conservative village way of life.

Paa

At 60-something, Amitabh Bachchan relived his Sherwood memories donning a tie and uniform for R Balki's Paa.

His character Auro exhibits a genetic disorder (progeria) resulting in a 12-year-old to resembling an elderly guy.

Dev D

Kalki Koechlin's breakthrough performance in Anurag Kashyap's modern-day version of Devdas immediately got her on Bollywood's map.

And she does well to convey the trauma of a happy-go-lucky school kid victimized by a nasty MMS scandal, which ruins her reputation in and outside the classrooms.

Koi Mil Gaya

As Rohit in the aliens/sci-fi drama, an adult Hrithik Roshan maintains a child-like disposition, struggles with studies and still attends school with much younger children.

Both his boyish persona and gallant avatar won appreciation kick-starting a hugely successful franchise ready to release its third film later this year.

Lucky: No Time For Love

It's way too awkward to watch Salman Khan romance a girl half his age in Lucky: No Time for Love.

What makes this St Petersburg story even weird is Sneha Ullal is still a bike-riding school kid.

Kya Kehna

There was a time when Preity Zinta was synonymous with all things youthful and bubbly. And her performance as a spirited school girl turned college-going mom in Kundan Shah's Kya Kehna got her rave response as an actress.

Here, she looks every bit of those impeccably smart classmates in this scene, doesn't she?

Mohabbatein

Aditya Chopra channelled a lot of Dead Poets Society to create his high-pitched romance drama.

And just like the boys in Peter Weir's film, the handsomely-attired Jugal Hansraj, Uday Chopra and Jimmy Shergill too are part of a prestigious institute called Gurukul.

Angrakshak

Pooja Bhatt is cuteness personified as the chatty albeit lonely school girl in Sunny Deol's action vehicle, Angrakshak.

Too bad the movie just goes haywire with its messed up storyline and screenplay.

Andaz

David Dhawan's Andaz is infamously remembered for its vulgar song and dances.

And that explains an overgrown student in Shakti Kapoor wearing a uniform of shorts and sweater. Although we much rather stare at the slim, bespectacled, pony-tailed, geeky Karisma Kapoor instead.

Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander

Between Model School, Rajput College, Queens, Xaviers, it's a competitive world out there in Mansoor Khan's delightful Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.

But in this crowd of uniform-sporting Archies and Veronicas, it's the rebellious, prankish spirit of Aamir Khan and Ayesha Jhulka that makes the coming-of-age tons of fun.

Chameli Ki Shaadi

A pleasantly chubby Amrita Singh impresses like never before in Basu Chaterjee's rip-roaring comedy of a wannabe wrestler and school-going imp's unlikely love story.

Who can forget her candid admission, 'Main toh poore chaar baar fail hui hoon?' Heh.

Guddi

Needless to say Jaya Bhaduri's Guddi is the ultimate depiction of a school girl.

As the starry-eyed romantic obsessed with superstar Dharmendra, Hrishikesh Mukerjee's coming-of-age tale illustrates the transition from girl to woman with characteristic grace and believability.
