The Kashyap is back.

Over the course of the last decade, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has blown our socks off with his style and filmmaking flair. The films might not always live up to the truly terrific trailers he cuts, but this next film -- a noir actioner about a kidnapped girl -- is looking tight and taut and brimming with bloody potential.

A father leaves his daughter inside a locked car in the middle of a teeming Bombay neighbourhood, only to find her missing. That’s the explosive start to the Ugly trailer which leads to relationship triangles and gradually escalating ransom demands and a bunch of compelling characters.

The music by GV Prakash is demonic: bass-heavy and mesmeric.

Shot by Nikos Andritsakis (the man behind LSD and Shanghai), the frames are red hot awesome. And the cast -- Rahul Bhat, Abir Goswami, Tejaswini Kolhapure and Ronit Roy -- all look well in place.

There’s promise everywhere. Could this be the lean thriller that gives us a Kashyap film to love instead of a Kashyap film to admire from a distance? Here’s hoping.

Ugly releases October 11.
