Gunday, My Name Is Khan: Bollywood's Biggest Valentine's Day HITS

Looking at Valentine's Day releases in the last 10 years.

All of us associate Valentine's Day with love.

Surprisingly, Bollywood thinks otherwise,

In the last 10 years, there's been only one quintessential romantic Bollywood release -- Ek Main Aur Ek Tu -- that released on V-Day .

This year, we saw Gunday, that tried to pass itself off as a romantic film. Gunday may not have got good reviews but it's doing very well at the box office.

We look back at movies that have released on Valentine's Day, and the box office fate that they enjoyed.

Gunday (2014)

Right from the title to the texture to the film's backdrop to actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor's bromance, everything about Gunday screams all things unromantic.

Still, when Yash Raj Films announced the film's arrival on Valentine's Day, no other filmmaker dared to compete.

The result was a solo release and a solid box office opening.

The critics haven't given favourable reviews but audiences are flocking the theatres. The film has already collected Rs 16 crores on the opening day.

'This Valentine...Love Will Be Murdered', proclaimed Murder 3.

Well, audience wasn't too accommodating either and the outcome was a lukewarm reception for this third installment in the Murder franchise.

Vivek Oberoi and Neha Sharma's Jayantabhai Li Luv Story also released on the same day and was a box office disaster.

Producer Karan Johar made sure his romantic film Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu opened on Valentine's Day.

Starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, the film got good reviews as well.

Nikhil Advani's family drama Patiala House, which focused on cricket, was hardly a good choice for V-Day.

Starring Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma, the film received a lukewarm response.

My Name Is Khan is the most successful Valentine's Day release till date.

It wasn't a quintessential love story but the presence of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol made up for that.

Billu saw Shah Rukh Khan in an extended guest appearance while Irrfan Khan played the protagonist. Lara Dutta played his wife.

The film didn't do as well as anticipated, even though it featured three item numbers with Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra.

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai have always shared brilliant chemistry, and it was out there once again with their romantic film Jodha Akbar.

The historical epic was directed by Ashutosh Gowariker.

Kunal Khemu's Superstar also released on the same day but it barely made Rs 3 crores.

Eklavya: The Royal Guard seemed like a period affair. But it was, in fact, set in contemporary times, albeit with havelis, rajas and begums.

Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Boman Irani and Vidya Balan, it was among director Vidhu Vinod Chopra's best, and was a mild success.

Fight Club (Riteish Deshmukh, Dino Morea, Aashish Chaudhary, Suniel Shetty and Zayed Khan) was nothing compared to its Hollywood counterpart. Yet, the promos had caught on, and it seemed like a promising take.

The film, however, didn't live up to it.

Sushmita Sen's Chingaari also opened on the same day, and met with disastrous consequences.

Though women played central roles in each of the four releases -- Jurm, Sheesha, Chehraa and Chaahat-Ek Nasha -- there was nothing in there for couples lining up to catch them in theatres.

All of them were disasters.
